At least one in four students experiences a mental health challenge. Even if a student has not personally experienced anxiety, depression, or another mental health concern, chances are likely that someone they love has experienced it. NAME YOUR STORY gives the opportunity to not only learn about the signs and symptoms of the most common mental health concerns affecting college students today, it provides training on how to talk about these experiences with one another. Participants will also get an opportunity to learn about self-care and how to prioritize their wellbeing. CAMPUSPEAK has partnered with Lauren Cook to provide thought-provoking content that is immediately applicable to students’ lives. By engaging with this content, students will gain tangible tools that they can use not only in their own life, but also when they are helping a friend, roommate, or classmate that they care about.

Here is what students and advisors will receive in this curriculum:

  • Up to 20 video-based online learning modules (60 minutes)
  • Onboarding and follow-up emails to all participants
  • 24/7 tech support
  • Facilitation guide for student leaders, advisors, and faculty to further the discussion surrounding mental health
  • Letter to parents
  • Resource guide that includes both national and local resources, tailored to your campus
  • Optional assessment tools before and after to evaluate students opinions, questions, and learning
  • Optional customization with your own personalized branding

Students will come away with a new understanding of their mental health. They will also have an appreciation that there has been an intentional opportunity for them to learn more about the information that they have likely already been seeking. By providing this content for students, they are learning that you CARE. By talking about mental health, we are making it not only okay for students to engage in their mental health pursuit, we are supporting it. This helps students feel comfortable seeking resources preventatively and purposefully. NAME YOUR STORY is the perfect platform to help your students feel heard and understood. Providing them with this information is the first step in helping them thrive, not only academically, but personally.

Learning Methods Utilized

Students lead incredibly busy lives. With so much to do, the NAME YOUR STORY curriculum is a manageable platform that integrates valuable information about mental health in a timely manner. Not to mention, learning about mental health can be a sensitive experience and by allowing students to learn about this content on their own time, they can have the space that they need to process.

For highly sensitive topics, like PTSD, abuse, trauma, and suicide, students are given a warning at the beginning of each video that if they need to pause the video and take some deep breaths, they are welcome to do so. Students are given opportunities to take breaks so that they do not feel overwhelmed. Each video also includes resources so that students can immediately call or go to a website to find out more information and get support.

The NAME YOUR STORY curriculum also provides you with the option to gather information from your students before and after the training. While quizzes can be included to assess specific learning, you can also customize the program to assess students’ opinions, questions, and concerns. Because the curriculum is included in an online platform, students can feel safe to share what is on their mind and you can trust that they are getting the necessary resources to get the help that they need.

You will also receive facilitation guides if you would like to continue the conversation from online learning to in-person application—which we recommend! The first step is education, the next step is action. By taking the time to lean into these conversations, students will see that it is not only safe to talk about mental health, but their ideas, feelings, and thoughts are welcome and wanted. Time and time again, students have expressed how grateful they are to be a part of a community that supports their mental health experience. We believe that the NAME YOUR STORY curriculum will be the perfect launching point to start the conversation at your school or with your organization.

Who is Lauren Cook and why did she create the Name Your Story curriculum?

Mental Health Expert Lauren Cook

As a mental health professional, Lauren saw countless college students struggling with their mental health. Both during her time in college and when she traveled the road as a National Consultant for her sorority, she met with hundreds of students who were privately struggling with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and the like. These students were desperate for help but were either too afraid or overwhelmed to get the help they needed. Not only did Lauren decide to get professional training to help students like this (she has her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from USC and is currently getting her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine), she wanted to create something that thousands of students could immediately access. Not only did she write the book, Name Your Story: How to Talk Openly About Mental Health While Embracing Wellness, she also created this online learning platform to further students’ understanding.Lauren believes that the best thing that students can do for their mental health is to empower themselves with knowledge. Learning about the signs and symptoms of these disorders, along with how to access help are topics that Lauren is passionate about. When we are willing to NAME these experiences, the fear and power attached to them diminishes. Lauren wants to help students take ownership in their journey and no longer feel ashamed for needing or wanting help. NAME YOUR STORY is the platform to help students begin or continue their journey to mental health and wellbeing.
